Project description

With over 60,000 patients per year, Heidenheim Hospital in Baden-Wuerttemberg is one of the largest providers of healthcare services in the region. In 2012, the structure of the hospital was improved through the commissioning of a new ward building.

The demand for health care services rises continually from year to year. For this reason, it was no surprise that, in 2010, Klinikum Heidenheim set a new record for patients 64,000 treatments. To meet this development and the latest treatment and structural requirements, the construction of a new ward building was started in 2009. The new building, which cost 42 million euros, offers space for 250 beds, a connected interdisciplinary triage station and a centre for intensive medicine.

Almost exactly two years elapsed between the ground-breaking ceremony in February 2009 and the official inauguration of the shell at the topping-out ceremony in February 2011. The new ward building will commence operations in mid-2012. The 110 metre-long and 25 metre-wide, six-storey building was added at right angles to an existing ward building. A particular feature of the new building is the helipad on the roof.

The branch office of Imtech Deutschland GmbH & Co. KG in Aalen led the electrical installation work in this construction project. The brief period given over to the mounting of the electrical installation was a challenge to be tackled. Particularly efficient and delay-free working methods were required to keep to the tight time schedule.

General building information

A large range of OBO products was used during the construction project: cable trays, rising sections, supports, brackets and E90 strain reliefs, as well as clips and C profiles. The OBO product unit KTS alone supplied approx. 2800 metres of cable trays of all sizes at a value of approximately 100,000 euros. These cable trays were used to mount standard routing systems with the E90 electrical supply maintenance standard according to DIN 4102 Part 12, as well as escape route installations according to the LAR cable systems directive.

Were special solutions used?

Various measures were employed to reduce the required construction time to a minimum. Instead of normal cable trays, quickly mounted OBO RKSM Magic cable trays were used. These cable trays are connected using a patented connection method, which saves time because there is no need for lengthy screwing together of the connection elements. In addition, thanks to the refined OBO logistics, the construction size could be delivered "just in time", according to the specifications of the mounting inspector. This saved on-site storage space and helped to ensure the mounting work was not delayed.

What type of challenges occurred during construction?

An additional challenge was posed by the third-party systems frequently installed in the hospital corridors. At collision points with the cable support system, OBO, in close cooperation with the construction management, created mounting solutions which complied with the appropriate regulations and testing certificates.
