Lehrter railway station Berlin

OBO systems at the transportation intersections of the metropolis

Where were OBO products installed?

Location: Bundesrepublik Deutschland, Berlin
Customer: City of Berlin
Installed OBO product units: Fire protection systems

Project description

Currently, the largest construction project of Deutsche Bahn AG is the implementation of the new concept for long-distance and regional railways in Berlin. OBO Bettermann supplied 13,000 metres of fire protection cable ducts for this challenging project.

At the intersection of the railways running into the centre of Berlin is Berlin Main Station, better known as Lehrter Station. It is the central interchange in a network of long-distance stations, which have connections to the regional and suburban railway networks and to buses, trams and a number of underground lines. Berlin Main Station has platforms located 10 metres above street level and 15 metres below the surface of the ground. From there, there is a regional railway connection to Potsdamer Platz station, the central access point to the lively office, commercial and cultural district located around Leipziger Platz and Potsdamer Platz.

General building information

In these areas, the OBO fire protection cable duct system was installed with suspension. To ensure that the inspection and retrofitting of cables is easy, fire protection ducts of protection classes I30, I90, E30 and E90 were installed with loose-fitting covers.

Why did the customer choose OBO products?

Besides the physical properties of the fire protection ducts, quick mounting also had a key role to play in this project. The prefabricated duct sections and the various fittings and special pieces were supplied "just in time" for each section of construction. In particular, the mounting times could be reduced considerably as the duct sections were simply placed loosely on the OBO suspensions.

Were special solutions used?

The system mesh cable trays were mounted on longitudinal spacers, in order to guarantee secondary ventilation and allow the attachment of standard separating retainers and special fittings. E90 special designs were used in the tunnel area, to compensate for the aerodynamic loads from pressure and suction forces, which occur particularly in the tunnel area.

OBO project managers were on-site right up to completion, in order to guarantee trouble-free installation of the fire protection cable ducts. In this way, it was possible to ensure that unforeseen changes and special system solutions, required by the construction site, did not impede construction progress.
